The Aged! What time demands?

The old people, they struggled, they fought the elements, they found everything against them here. The river, the summers, and the heat. So finally when they settled the storm there and got the water on that bench,  most of them left.

“A test of a people is how it behaves toward the old. It is easy to love children. Even tyrants and dictators make a point of being fond of children. But the affection and care for the old, the incurable, the helpless are the true gold mines of a culture.” – Abraham Heschel

It is also part of a human character as to how he treats and behaves with an aged person. Following points will help you out when it comes to dealing with old people including one’s old parents.

What youngers should do?

1. Respect:524368_265760690176177_165779253507655_583526_1717536405_n.jpg

Being older alone makes a person eligible for respect. Even if an aged person is evil or insane, we need to treat him with respect. His age is an enough reason to treat him with good words and manners.

2. Take care of aged parents:

During a person’s lifetime, if he finds one or both of his parents in old age he should:

a) not say to them a word of disrespect,
b) not to scold them or express rudeness,
c) Act humbly to them in mercy, and keep your shoulders down before them, and
d) Pray for them: My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.

What the aged should do himself?

1. Accept the reality:

Color dyeing your white hairs black won’t make any difference. Accepting the reality of you growing old is hard but still you need to understand that humans haven’t invented a medicine to go back.

2. Patience:

Old age is a time of discomfort and health issues. In these times of distress, you need to have patience.

3. Medical Treatment:

Whatever possible treatment can be done should be done. It is the responsibility of children to provide the possible treatment.

4. Hope and pray for good life:

One should keep up hope and never ask for death in times of pain. Keep hoping for better always.

5. Repentance for bad deeds:

Everyone has done a bad deed at any point of life. And yes, old age is the last chance you are getting to repent for those mistakes. Better use it wisely.

6. Testament (Bequest) or (Wasihat):

This is also an important thing to do in order to avoid your children fighting over after your death. Write it down and hand it over or say it amongst witnesses.

7. Fidelity and Debts:

If you have the resources pay off your debts and return the fidelities to their destinations. If you can’t, ask your children or family to do on your behalf. Anyways keep your will positive to return everything you owe.

8. Ask help from God against Insult (dishonor):

These times are already tough and dishonor (insults) in society can ruin a person’s last days. Pray to God that you don’t need to face such days.

To Conclude:

Respect the old when you are young;

Help the weak when you are strong;

Confess the fault when you are wrong;

Because one day in life, you will be

old, weak and wrong.
